SP Kazeem Raheem, a Divisional Police Officer, was killed by bandits in Maru town, which is the headquarters of Zamfara state’s Maru local government district.
Raheem was killed together with a vigilante and a police sergeant who have not yet been recognized.

A resident, who yearned for anonymity, told Daily Trust that the crooks had entered the area with the intention of kidnapping Alhaji Iliyasu, a businessman.

His brother had previously been kidnapped by the armed guys, but was supposedly let free when a ransom was paid. They returned to try to abduct him, but he was able to flee, and they took his wife.

The DPO lost his life in the gunfight, but he rallied his colleagues to stop the criminals’ attempt to kidnap the businessman.

“It was an awful encounter. It was around two in the morning when I heard a lot of shooting. These criminals have been attacking Maru town constantly; in the last year, several people have been abducted.

At the time this story was filed, SP Muhammad Shehu, the state police command’s spokesperson, was not available for comment since his phone lines were down.

Despite repeated promises to put the situation under control, bandits have persisted in making life intolerable for the people living in North West.
