A 9-year-old male lion killed Olabode Olawuyi, a zookeeper, on Monday at the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Zoological Garden in Ile-Ife.
According to Alabareports, the Olawuyi, a veterinarian technician who had overseen the zoological park for more than ten years, died while providing food for the savage cats living in their den.

In a statement released on Monday, the university’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the occurrence and stated that while other staff members present at the scene to their utmost to save the deceased, the wild cat had already caused serious casualties.

The university official expressed sympathy to Olawuyi’s family while also stating that a thorough investigation into the incident’s immediate and distant causes had been requested by management.

He declared, “Mr. Olawuyi has been caring for the lions on campus since they were born approximately nine years ago, but the man who had been feeding them was tragically killed by the male lion.”

“The wild cat had already caused severe fatalities, despite the efforts of the other staff members present at the scene to rescue their boss.”

Olarewaju claimed that the management team, under the direction of Vice Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire, hastily stopped a meeting that was in progress for an on-the-spot review after learning of the tragic news.

Upon arriving, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, the acting director of the University Health and Medical Center, notified Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE that all attempts to save the victim’s life had been unsuccessful.

“The widow and children of the deceased have received a delegation from the University administration, pleading with them to find comfort in the knowledge that God, who both gives and takes life, is able to take it away.”
