Governors who were elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PD) platform who urged President Bola Tinubu to step down due to the nation’s worsening economic situation have come under pressure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP governors, according to the APC, have abandoned their duties as chief executive officers of their states and instead have become a group of prophetic doomsayers.

This was disclosed by the ruling party on Sunday through a statement released by Felix Morka, national publicity secretary.

Morka contended that the PDP governors’ demand for Tinubu’s resignation was self-indicting, saying that instead of holding the federal government accountable for their complete failure, they ought to follow their own advice and step down from their positions.

The statement said, “Today, governors elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ‘throw in the towel’ if he can no longer govern Nigeria, basking in wilful blindness to their constitutional responsibilities.” Now, this repugnant executive flippancy serves as a badge of identification for these apathetic yet ruthlessly complicit observers of their governments’ and citizens’ affairs.

The concept of shared, constitutionally defined obligations among the three levels of government—federal, state, and local—runs through federal systems like the one we have. To ensure that all citizens may benefit from democracy, cooperation and coordination between the three tiers of government are necessary for effective governance. Governors have a serious obligation to give constructive ideas or answers to the problems facing our nation’s governance, whenever feasible, as a result of their membership in the National Economic Council and National Council of State.

Governors are entitled to free expression just like any other citizen. But in order to use that right, one must measure it against a reasonable and respectable norm. It is important to refrain from making careless remarks that could stoke racial tensions and societal unrest. Even given the current difficult economic and security conditions of Nigeria, the PDP governors’ comparison of the country to Venezuela is counterproductive and reeks of unjustified fury.

In this momentous season of profound and long-lasting economic transformation in our nation, President Bola Tinubu is assuming responsibility and demonstrating strong leadership. Bold and comprehensive reforms that the government has started are essential to prosperity, long-term growth, and economic recovery. The administration is resolute in its efforts to alleviate the temporary yet agonizing struggles that our people are facing as these initiatives start to produce the intended outcomes.

Nigerians have a right to a secure, peaceful existence with access to the most basic social and economic facilities. During these trying times, our Party and administration ask for patience as our country inexorably flies toward more stable ground and a prosperous future.
