Michael Ayodele Odeniyi, a professor of pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy at the University of Ibadan, has urged the federal government to grant Nigerian universities their autonomy back.

This statement was made by Odeniyi during the university’s 543rd inaugural lecture.

“Whatever You Bind on Earth: New and Old Polymers in Pharmaceutical Engineering” was the title of the talk.

He demanded that without jeopardizing vital financing, the federal government restore full academic and administrative autonomy for Nigerian universities.

Odeniyi observed that efforts to guarantee the caliber of student admissions and the curriculum development process have been under attack recently.

He bemoaned the erosion of the academic autonomy of institutions to choose the course of their curricula.

He continued by saying that data from the Raw Materials Research and Development Council revealed that more than three trillion naira was spent on importing pharmaceuticals into the nation during the previous six years.

The UI Don demands that Nigerian universities be given their full sovereignty back.

“Without jeopardizing vital funds, I demand that the government restore full academic and administrative autonomy for Nigerian universities.

The ability to guarantee the caliber of student admissions and the curriculum creation process have both come under attack recently.

“The government could impose taxes and tariffs on imported excipients in order to encourage local production.”
