On Thursday, there was unrest at Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, following reports that several students had attacked the town’s divisional police station.

According to reports that were acquired, the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents conducting a raid on suspected black spots near the school grounds were the reason behind the altercation.

The state police command, through its spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, confirmed the events in a statement released on Friday morning. According to Toun, the gatherings started at approximately 1600 hours and were centered around complaints regarding the NDLEA’s recent raids on areas of the school grounds that were considered “black spots.”

“In addition, the stones thrown at the police station caused minor injuries to one police officer, PC Fayemi Kehinde. After receiving first assistance at the hospital, he was released, according to Toun.

The Daily Post reported that three more tactical squads and the DPO Shao Division had arrived at the scene to assist in de-escalating the situation.

Victor Olaiya, the state’s police commissioner, has stressed the need for all KWASU students participating in the incident to exercise caution. He exhorts people to actively participate in a calm discourse in order to address the current problems.
