Actress Linda Osifo of Nollywood has disclosed that she considered bleaching her skin due to racial epithets while in Canada.
The black actress, who was born in Benin City, Nigeria, and moved to Canada when she was sixteen, described the racism she experienced as traumatizing since it came from “within.”
In a recent interview, she revealed this to media personality Chude Jideonwo.
“You mentioned wanting to bleach your skin because people would call me a monkey when I grew up,” inquired Chude, the host. “Did this actually occur?”
Osifo answered, “Yeah.” It does indeed occur. You know, it also occurs from your shade. That being said, that makes it even more peculiar.
“I always think that people who are bullied don’t deserve to be bullied.”by strangers. It originates inside. Because even though you might not care if someone else says it, it hurts more if it comes from someone you know and are in close proximity to every other day.
This happened in Canada when I was a teenager. The benefit of returning to Nigeria was that I was able to see more people that resembled myself.
She continued by saying that moving to Nigeria increased her sense of self-worth.
