On Sunday, the Recording Academy officially declared Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the recipient of the first-ever Best African Music Performance award.
Tyla secured the win, surpassing tracks by notable Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
However, the post-announcement surprise came when, instead of Tyla’s mid-tempo track, the timeless classic ‘Water No Get Enemy’ by Fela was played.

This unexpected blunder sparked reactions from fans and music critics, particularly in Nigeria, where many criticized the Recording Academy for the perceived “silly mistake.”
