On Monday, a group of armed troops stormed through the gate of the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, spreading fear throughout the community.

Three of the troops reportedly entered the building before the rest were halted at the gate, according to local merchants close to the police headquarters.

Many local businesses had to quickly close for the day, according to a shopkeeper who went by the name Nkechi, out of concern that they would be caught in the crossfire.

Around 1pm, she informed our correspondent, about twenty-five armed soldiers were spotted at the command headquarters gate, getting into a heated fight with the police officers stationed there.

The soldiers left the scene after a senior police officer named Edward Ebuka interfered, according to Nkechi.

Three soldiers entered the building; the policeman arrested and disarmed them, according to a top security source who spoke to our correspondent under anonymity. The remaining soldiers fled.

He stated that the arrest and detention of a soldier on Saturday for an offense that was not immediately clear was maybe related to the soldiers’ duty in the area.

“Those who came had planned to disarm our men at the gate,” the insider said. Since Saturday, a soldier has been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Bureau for an offense that I am not aware of.
“I believe the soldiers that arrived at the command center intended to take him by force. Four soldiers are being held here at the moment.

Folasade Odoro, the state’s police public relations officer, did not confirm or deny the occurrence when approached for comment.

She said simply, “Newsmen will be briefed later on what happened here today (Monday) very soon.”
